In April 2025, Mr. Sakaguchi from our company participated in the ISTSS 2025 International Conference held in Iceland. The conference took place at a hotel in Reykjavik, the capital city, and was attended by approximately 150 participants, primarily from Europe and North America.

Earlier in the same week, another conference—the Fire in Vehicles (FIVE) Conference—was held, and ISTSS (International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security) began right after its conclusion. This efficient scheduling allowed participants to attend both events seamlessly. Both conferences were organized by the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE).

ISTSS is a conference focused on tunnel fires and disaster prevention systems. There was only one presentation from Japan. There were four questions from the audience, showing a high level of interest. We believe it was a well-received and meaningful presentation.

We stopped in Stockholm before attending the ISTSS conference. We visited the E4 tunnel, part of which is scheduled to open by the end of this year.We also toured the Nobel Prize Museum, where we saw the actual chair signed by Dr. Yamanaka when he received his award.

In recent years, Iceland has experienced lava flows that have forced many residents to evacuate. As part of the conference’s technical visit, we toured areas affected by the lava.We were deeply moved by the strong determination of the local people to recover and rebuild their communities.
